The president of the House of Representatives, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), said that the issue of food prices would be resolved if Brazil had done what it called the “Fiscal House duty”. The statements took place on the morning of Monday, 7, during an event about the current Brazilian political scenario, held by the São Paulo Commercial Association (ACSP).
At the time, Motta said he has defended a spending and fiscal responsibility agenda with the federal government.
“We have defended this, put with the government and the minister himself (Fernando) Haddad this need (of spending cuts). In the times I was with the President of the Republic, we put that many of these discussions that are made today about the high interest rate and the increase in food prices, this could all be resolved,” said the mayor, quoting the Minister of Finance and President Luiz Lula da Silva.
Motta continued: “Of course, this food issue has a crop issue on the international scene, but much is also true because of the high quotation of the dollar, which moves a lot on the food issue. If we did the Fiscal House duty, maybe these problems were all more controlled.”
The mayor also said that fiscal responsibility and public spending review is “a remedy for various pathologies that our country has.”
And continued: “When we signal in this sense, the result is already immediate, it changes to positive.”
