Investment of R $ 10 million aims to increase safety in operations; Most dead PMs are the victim of head shots
The Military Police of Rio de Janeiro announced on Wednesday (23.abr.2025) the acquisition of 4,000 ballistic helmets. The goal is to increase the protection of agents in special operations, protecting the head and neck against shots.
The purchase was made after the finding that 69% of police officers killed in service in recent years have been victims of shots in the head. From 2020 to 2025, of the 64 PMs killed, 44 were hit in this region of the body.
“Just as we invest in armored vehicles, renewal of vests and other personal protective equipment, ballistic helmets were acquired to preserve the lives of our military police who daily face strongly armed criminals,” The governor of Rio de Janeiro, (PL).
The helmets, acquired for R $ 10 million, will be distributed to specialized PM units, such as the GAT (Tactical Action Grouping) and Patamo (mobile tactical patrolling).
In addition to protection, helmets offer thermal stability, suitable for the climate of Rio de Janeiro. The acquisition follows the purchase of 1,078 antitrauma helmets in 2023, intended for agents acting in protest containment.
