Hon. Mr. President

We, below signed, representing thousands of Brazilians from different regions of the country, we joined in one voice to express our deep concern for the continuous search of their government for the exploitation of oil in the Foz Amazonas Foz Basin.

As parliamentarians committed to approaching national and global environmental challenges, we recognize that the expansion of oil exploration in the Amazon biome is incompatible with urgent demands of climate crisis and global change towards a fair and equitable energy transition.

Once again, Ibama’s team of technicians issued a negative assessment of block exploration plans 59.

Foz do Amazonas is a unique and ecologically vital ecosystem that houses a rich marine biodiversity and plays a crucial role in the ecological flows of the Amazon River and the entire Amazonian biome.

Protecting these ecosystems is a fundamental responsibility in the face of climbing the climate crisis. As a nation, Brazil has the privilege of housing more than 60% of the Amazonian biome – one of the most important ecosystems in the fight against global warming. But with this privilege comes a profound responsibility to guarantee its preservation.

This is why we, legislators from all over the country and at all levels, are committed to defending the Amazonian biome, safeguarding their biodiversity and protecting the sustainable life means of indigenous, quilombolas, riverside and other traditional peoples and communities that depend on it.

With all due respect, Mr. President, we ask you to meet the recommendations of the experts and suspend a Oil prospecting in the Foz do Amazonas basin.

We also make an invitation to collaborate in an ambitious energy transition plan – which progressively reduces extractive oil and mining pressures in the Brazilian Amazon and at the same time position our country as a global leader in the fight against climate crisis.

We are ready to work together towards a future that prioritizes environmental integrity, climate resilience and the well-being of all Brazilians and their future generations.
