State Representative Emídio de Souza (PT-SP) filed a project to include the name of the Latin America Memorial, located in São Paulo, in recognition of the cultural, political and humanist value of the religious leader.
By the text, the place would be renamed – Pope Francis. The proposal states that the Memorial Foundation of Latin America should adopt the new name of space in its institutional communication, dissemination materials, digital platforms and other official documents. The legal name of the maintaining entity would not need to change.
The Emídio project also provides that the Secretariat of Culture and the Foundation would have up to 90 days after the publication of the law to take the necessary steps to implement the new name.
In justification, the parliamentarian states that the goal is to honor the Pope, who is.
“His trajectory and his legacy transcend the boundaries of the religious field, having consolidated as a world reference of humility, interreligious dialogue, defense of social justice and combating exclusion,” he argues.
He recalls that the pontiff edited an encyclical that denounced “the evils of consumerism and irresponsible development” and in which he argued that society adopt a new model of coexistence with nature.
“In attributing the name of Pope Francis to the Latin American Memorial, the State of São Paulo recognizes the profound cultural, political and humanist value of one of the most influential figures of the 21st century, whose principles are in line with the ideals of Latin American integration, fraternity between peoples and valorization of cultural diversity that inspired the creation of the Memorial Foundation of Latin America,” he says.
