The Palestinian President Mahmud Abas, 89, appointed a nearby advisor, Hussein al-Sheikh on Saturday, for the newly created position of vice president of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), making him his possible successor.
The position was formally established on Thursday, at the initiative of Mahmoud Abbas himself, during a convention in Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank, while the international community has long been asking for the PLO to be reformed.
Mr. Abbas also presides over the Palestinian authority, which several Arab and Western countries want to play a role in the Gaza Strip Government after the war that has been fought there since October 2023.
