US Treasury Secretary claims to be optimistic about agreement with the Chinese after discussions about tariffs
Scott Bessent, United States Treasury Secretary, said there are advances in a possible tariff agreement with China. In an interview with “This Week” ABC News This Sunday (27.br.2025), Bessent discussed interactions with Chinese counterparts in Washington. The conversations took place during the IMF (International Monetary Fund) meetings and addressed financial stability and global economic alerts.
The tariff tension between the United States and China has been a point of discord. US President Donald Trump (Republican) mentioned that negotiations were underway, a statement denied by the China Foreign Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Bessent suggested that Chinese denial about negotiations aimed at an internal audience. He stated that there is a process in progress to resolve the issue and expressed confidence in the unsustainability of high tariffs for Chinese business.
The secretary praised Trump’s negotiation strategy, describing it as “Strategic uncertainty” in game theory. This approach, he said, has leveraged negotiations.
