Blackout was caused by “a rare atmospheric phenomenon”
REN – National Energy Networks has admitted, in statements to Reuters, that the “totalization of the network may take up to a week.”
According to the operator, “the interruptions in the supply of electricity in Portugal resulted from a failure in the Spanish power grid, related to a rare atmospheric phenomenon.”
“Due to extreme temperature variations inside Spain, there were anomalous oscillations on the very high voltage lines (400 kV), a phenomenon known as ging-induced atmospheric vibration. These oscillations caused synchronization failures between the electrical systems, leading to successive disturbances throughout the interconnected European network. Due to the complexity of the phenomenon and the need for the need for Refoquilibrate electricity flows at the international level, it is estimated that the totalization of the network may take up to a week. “
The REN has confirmed a widespread cut in the electrical supply throughout the Iberian Peninsula and part of the French territory and advanced that the restoration plans are being activated by energy supply stages.
The blackout was registered at 11:30 from Lisbon.
