“The president made it clear that he wants a permanent ceasefire,” says the White House spokesman, adding that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin “should sit at the negotiation table to get out of this impasse” in Ukraine.
The White House insisted on Monday that US President Donald Trump wants a permanent ceasefire in Ukraine and not just a temporary truce such as Russia.
“The president made it clear that he wants a permanent ceasefire,” said White House spokesman Karoline Leavitt. “Although it remains optimistic that it can reach an agreement, it is also realistic. Both leaders must sit at the negotiation table to get out of this impasse,” added the spokesman, referring to the US President and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
The Russian presidency declared a total ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8 to 10 when Russia celebrates the day of victory over Germany Nazi.
The truce will start at 00:00 on May 8 (22:00 May 7 in Lisbon) and will be extended until May 10.
According to Kremlin, Putin ordered the total termination of hostilities for “humanitarian reasons” for victory day on May 9, but has already warned about retaliation.
However, “in case of violation of the ceasefire by the Ukrainian party, the Russian armed forces will give an adequate and effective response,” Putin’s office warned in a statement.
