Russia arrested a Greek property and enrolled oil tanker in Liberia that sailed on a route agreed from an Estonian port through Russian waters in the sea called “NATO Lake”, according to the Ministries of Transportation and Foreign Affairs of Estonia.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, informed Estonia’s allies in the NATO of the Russian maneuver. “Today’s incident shows that Russia continues to behave unpredictably,” he said.
According to the Ministry of Transportation, when leaving the port of Sillamäe, the ships move through the territorial sea of the Russian Federation, since this route is safer for the large ships than to navigate in shallow stubborn waters.
This safe navigation route for ships, which does not pass through national borders, has been agreed between Russia, Estonia and Finland. “To avoid similar incidents in the future, Estonia will redirect traffic to and from Sillamäe exclusively through Estonias territorial waters,” he said exterior.
The ship, which transported shale oil from the Eastern Eastern Port of Sillamae and was heading to Rotterdam is the M/T Green Admire, an oil tanker built in 2022 and owned by the Greek company Aegean Shipping.
According to the Estonia Er er website, the oil company is currently next to the Russian island of Suursaare, an old Finnish territory delivered to the Soviet Union after World War II.
The incident occurs several days after the Estonia Navy tried to stop an oil -free oil company, belonging to the Russian ghost fleet, which was sailing through Estonias waters. The ship did not stop and Russia sent a hunt to escort the oil company, violating Estonia’s airspace in the process.
Following this incident, the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radoslaw Sikorski, declared Friday after a ministerial meeting of the Baltic Sea States Council that must be modified international laws and standards on maritime traffic so that Baltic countries can take more forceful measures against the Russian fleet in the shadow.
