American blueberries have a shallow root system. This makes it difficult for them to collect ingredients from the ground, because they are not able to reach for no deeper layers of soil. Their shrubs are also very sensitive to changes in the pH of the substrate. That is why it is so important to regularly and properly fertilize blueberries. We will pay much smaller collections for the error.
Potassium sulfate is one of the best mineral fertilizers for blueberries. It is especially recommended during the formation of fruit, i.e. from the end of May to July. It contains a large dose of potassium (K₂o), which is responsible for the firmness, taste and size of the fruit. In turn, a small amount of sulfur has a positive effect on the absorption of nutrients. Importantly, this fertilizer does not contain chlorides, which are harmful to the root system of blueberries.
Potassium sulfate is not an organic but mineral fertilizer, but it belongs to the so -called group “safe” fertilizers. This means that it does not interfere with the pH of the soil and is well tolerated by acidophilic plants. It should be used points, under plants, once or twice a season. Do it best after watering the bushes so as not to damage the roots. Dosage should be in line with the instructions on the packaging, but usually OK. 20-30 g per plantscattered within the crown of the bush.
Blueberries prefer sour soils (pH 3.5-4.5). Hence, it is worth reaching for such conditioners that will not lift the pH of the soil. So, for example, lime falls off. What fertilizers are best for blueberries?
- Nitrogen fertilizers: used in spring, support the development of shoots and leaves. Ammonium sulfate is often recommended because of its acidifying properties;
- Potassium and phosphorus fertilizers: used during fruiting, improve the quality and taste of fruit and prepare plants for winter;
- Organic fertilizers: needle compost, sour peat or acidifying manure are natural alternatives that improve the soil structure and provide the necessary nutrients.
In the case of mineral fertilizers, it is worth reaching for those that break down in the soil in extended time, but their action is milder. It is more difficult to carry out the plant in this way.

Fertilization of blueberries should be strictly adapted to the plant development phase. The first power supply should be carried out in early spring, already in March or Aprilas soon as vegetation begins. Then the bushes need energy to build young shoots and leaves. This is the most important moment to provide nitrogen that stimulates the growth of green mass.
At the end of May and early June, blueberries enter the intensive fruit growth phase. Later use of fertilizers could delay the woodenness of the shoots, increasing the risk of frost damage.
