As part of an extensive operation focused on the largest criminal organization in the Spanish Canary Islands, police detained nearly 50 suspects and secured nearly four tons of cocaine. This is reported by TASR according to Friday’s press release of the European Police Office Europol.
The operation was led by the Spanish police with the help of choirs from Portugal, Colombia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The security forces on June 3 at raids in 29 houses on the islands of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote arrested a total of 48 suspects and seized 3.8 tons of cocaine. The police also seized 69 vehicles, including several ships and approximately € 100,000 in cash.
The criminal organization imported drugs to the European Union through the Atlantic Ocean from South America. The gang used 11 motorboats. Cocaine was imported into the Canary Islands that served as a distribution center for the whole of Europe. Europol played a key role in the investigation, which provided the Police Corps analytical and financial support. The suspects used a comprehensive encrypted communication system, including satellite terminals, hard -to -trash phones and coded language to avoid catching up.
