At first glance, the monstrous fish lying on dry land dominates the action. A lot of smaller conspecifics ooze out of its mouth and cut open stomach. What this is all about can be seen from the image in the foreground, where father and son are sitting in a rowing boat. While the son pulls a small fish out of the slit belly of a larger one, the father, quoting a Dutch proverb, points to the main motif: “Look, son, I have known this for a long time, that the big fish eat the little ones.”
