Roland Garros Story

Roland Garros was created in 1891 as a national tournament of France. In 1925, he began to accept foreign players and officially entered the Grand Slam tournament calendar. Three years later, in 1928, the event was played at the complex built in Paris for that year’s Davis Cup final. Since then, the tournament takes place annually in the same place.

The tournament bears the name of Roland Garros, a French aviator who fought in World War I and died in combat in 1918. The tribute was made by Stade Français, the club responsible for the construction of the new stadium.

Currently, Roland Garros is the only one of the four Grand Slams played on the clay and the second major of the season after the Australian Open. The competition lasts two weeks, between late May and early June, with male, female, pairs and youth keys.
