It’s not official yet, but everything indicates that 2025 was the last season of Oscar’s professional playing career. After being diagnosed with vasovagal syncope and having a year marked by injuries, the midfielder has already informed those close to him that he will retire at the age of 34.
Vasovagal syncope is a transient loss of consciousness caused by a decrease in blood pressure and heart rate. Last November 11, while undergoing routine examinations at the Barra Funda CT, the number 8 passed out and had to spend five days under medical care at the Albert Einstein Hospital.
São Paulo intended to have a meeting with Oscar to discuss the next steps in the athlete’s career. However, the question about his health and the fainting episode – which left the athlete without a pulse for 50 seconds – weighed on the decision to retire.
According to ESPN, the São Paulo board wants to keep Oscar within the club, to work behind the scenes. His current contract runs until the end of 2027.
In the 2025 season, Oscar played 21 games for Tricolor Paulista, adding two goals and five assists.
