Colombian president Gustavo Petro on Sunday (8) a meeting of the Peace and Security Council to discuss the attack on Senator Miguel Uriba Turbay, shot on Saturday (7) during a political event in Bogota.
The senator, who is a presidential candidate for the Centro Democratic right-wing party, is still hospitalized in serious condition at the Fundación Santa Fe clinic.
After meeting with the mayor of the capital, Carlos Galán, and the military summit, Petro stated that the priority is to identify all those involved in the attack, including the principals. The government will also investigate possible failures in the safety of the parliamentarian. Due to the severity of the case, Petro canceled a trip to France.

The Attorney’s Office said Uribe was shot two times. A 15 -year -old girl was arrested on the spot with a gun. He was also injured and is in custody. Two other people were injured. More than 100 agents participate in the investigation.
The attack provoked reactions from the entire political spectrum. Authorities and parties ask for moderation in the debate and suggest the suspension of election campaigns.
The presidency said the country “cannot tolerate more polarization.” International leaders also manifested themselves.

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the attack and charged moderation from the Colombian government. The European Union (EU), Chile and Ecuador expressed solidarity to the senator’s family.
The presidential election in Colombia is scheduled for May 2026.
