Speaking to journalists in Lisbon, where he participates in the forum promoted by Gilmar Mendes, former president says that conciliation “is fundamental because it is a determination of the Federal Constitution”, reinforcing the view that the Supreme can be a key piece to find a middle ground between executive and legislative

Lisbon-Former President Michel Temer, present on Wednesday (2) at the Lisbon Legal Forum, said that the Ministers of the Supreme Court (STF) are committed to mediating the dialogue between the executive and the Congress in the face of the crisis caused by the dispute over the increase in IOF. In an interview with journalists at the event, he pointed out that this effort must be valued and followed.

“For the word of Minister Gilmar, the word of the ministers all, even yesterday spoke Minister Alexandre, they all want to help in a great national conciliation,” said Temer. “The dialogue between powers is fundamental. And it is fundamental because it is a determination of the Federal Constitution,” he said, reinforcing the view that the Supreme can be a key piece to find a compromise between executive and legislative.

Temer also argued that the government and Congress should sit at the table to resolve the impasse rather than judicialize the conflict. “The ideal would be the executive and the legislature to sit at the table and find a joint solution instead of judicializing,” he said, citing the recent overthrow of the IOF decree as a clear impasse that could have political solution.

The former president also recalled his own experience, highlighting a movement that involved dialogue and reissue of legislative discussion: “In the time of Fernando Henrique, when the pension reform proposal was not approved, an amendment immediately edited and then six months later, the pension reform was approved. These things depend on dialogue.”

“Pacifying the country means, precisely, you have harmony between men and power,” he said.

A S.Paulo Folha Earlier he anticipated that behind the scenes there is a movement of appeasement by the Supreme, the conflict that was intensified after the government triggered the Supreme Court against the overthrow of the IOF decree. This morning, characters from Brasilia began to talk openly about this possibility during the Gilmar Mendes event in Lisbon, including the minister himself, who earlier signaled that he expects a peaceful resolution on the issue.
