The goalkeeper, from Vasco da Gama, was expelled during the 1-1 draw against Internacional, this Sunday (27/7), by. The referee Flávio Rodrigues de Souza understood that, when he bent to request medical attention, the athlete would be slowing the restart of the match. He received two yellow cards in different throws and, consequently, the red card.

The bid generated indignation by the Cruzmaltino team, with protests by Vegetti on the field’s departure and coach Fernando Diniz. During the press conference, the coach stated that the referee is not a doctor: “For me, it is inadmissible. He does not have the least appropriate.”

In an official note, Vasco da Gama called the performance of Flávio Rodrigues de Souza “disastrous” and even asked for the referee’s removal: “Is Vasco da Gama’s error or incompetence only to take all appropriate administrative measures to the CBF arbitration committee,” the club promised.

In the summary, Flávio Rodrigues said he expelled Leo Jardim by 2nd yellow card, due to “slowing the restart of the game”. According to the referee, the goalkeeper would have fallen to the ground for no apparent reason: “Even being requested by me and by assistant number 1, refused to get up. I emphasize that it was fallen throughout the substitution procedure, having enough time to be answered, not doing it.” But, after all, what do football rules say about expulsion?

Football Rules

The International Football Association Board (IFAB), a body that regulates the rules of football, makes available in the book Laws of the Game, some topics regarding the delay of the game restart and the punishments for athletes. In topic 3, powers and duties, from rule 5, the injuries are addressed. According to the document, if the referee has authorized the entry of doctors and/or machinery, the injured player must leave the field on the stretcher or walking: “The player who does not accept the referee order should be warned by yellow card for antisport conduct.”

Leo Jardim was not attended by the medical team of Vasco da Gama. In addition, the rule cites some exceptions to the field player’s mandatory departure after injury or service. One of them is precisely the case of goalkeepers, who can continue playing. On the other hand, IFAB rules provide for the yellow card to athletes who practice anti -sport conduct: “among which: try to deceive the referee, for example, pretending to have suffered an injury or have received a foul (simulation).”

Punishment is also planned for players who late the restart of the game. Finally, the official document discusses the meaning of injured player evaluation, which would be a quick examination of an injury, usually performed by a doctor, to verify that a player requires treatment. The excerpt in question talks about the prominence of doctors in the evaluation, but does not exclude the possibility of other professionals, such as the referee, check if the player needs care. This standard, added to the rule of anti -sport conduct, would make the punishment with yellow card valid.
