78% see deputies and senators acting in their own, Datafolha points out

The last round of the Datafolha poll, released on Tuesday (5), shows that the disapproval of the work of the National Congress went up again. For 35% of Brazilians, the performance of federal deputies and senators is bad or bad, while only 18% consider it great or good. The index repeats the negative levels recorded at the end of 2023, after a brief improvement at the beginning of the Lula administration.

The main diagnosis pointed out by the research is the distancing between Congress and society. For 78% of respondents, parliamentarians act more on their own cause than for the benefit of the population. Only 18% believe that congressmen put the public interest in the first place.

In addition, 73% estimate that deputies and senators treat the rich better than the poor. This data has been directly connected to the petista offensive on social networks since the end of June, in response to the suspension by Congress of the increase in IOF on investments abroad.

Bolsonarists criticize more

The rejection of the legislature is more pronounced among Jair Bolsonaro (PL) voters: 38% consider the work bad or bad, against only 14% that evaluate it positively. Among the Lula (PT) voters, the rates are more balanced – 28% of disapproval and 26% approval.

This contrast occurs even with the recent friction between Planalto and Congress, especially after the suspension of government economic measures. The difference may be linked to the perception, among pockets, that Congress has not done enough to block the Lula administration, besides the lack of advance in agendas such as amnesty to the scammers of January 8, proposed by allies of Bolsonaro, but fought by the centron and the PT.

Historical rejection

Since Datafolha began to measure the popularity of Congress in the 1990s, approval rates have never exceeded 25%. The highest mark was recorded in late 2010, last year of Lula’s second term. In 2003, the beginning of his first government, there was the only time when approval (24%) numerically surpassed the rejection (22%).

The worst moment of the legislature was registered in November 2017, when 60% of Brazilians disapproved of the performance of Congress. At the time, the House of Representatives had barred a complaint for the second time against then -President Michel Temer (MDB), who could lead to his removal.

The survey, conducted on July 29 and 30, interviewed 2,004 people in 130 municipalities and has a margin of error of two percentage points.
