Portugal is (from afar) the country of the EU where

In the last 18 years it has burned in Portugal almost three times more territory than in Greece, which occupies second place in the list of countries where the most area has burned. Trancoso’s fire will probably be the largest ever in Portugal.

Portugal is, notably, the country of the European Union (EU) with the largest percentage of burned area. Only This year has already burned 2.35% of the territory.

To get an idea, in second place comes Greece, with almost three times less burned area.

According to figures from the European Forest Fire Information System (Effis), detailed by, on average, between 2006 and 2024 burned 1.05% of about 92,000 square kilometers from the Portuguese territory. In Greece burned 0.38% of the territory.

This year, for example, Portugal has long exceeded this average, with 2.35% of our country area (216,214 hectares) already burned. In relative terms, in 2025, only in Cyprus it burned a percentage of the territory (2.3%) similar to Portugal. However, as the public notes, the average percentage of the last 18 years is much lower than Portuguese: 0.32% (the third largest in the EU).

To the morning, the forest engineer Paulo Fernandes says that Portugal presents all the conditions to lead this ranking: “There are countries that have one or the other ingredient that favors the occurrence of fires, Portugal has the ingredients all: Many ignitions, a continuous forest space in mountain ranges, a climate that generates a lot of biomass in winter and has severe summer drought and an excessively focused on civil protection system“.

According to Effis, the Trancoso firewho joined another fire that launched in Sátão, is the largest of this year and Probably the largest ever in Portugal.

The Effis estimates an burned area of almost 65,000 hectares for the Trancoso fire. However, in the last daily report the ICNF made about the burned area, this fire appeared “only” with 49,324 hectares destroyed.

So far, the largest fire in Portugal was in October 2017, in Vilarinho, Lousã, which accounted for more than 53,000 burned hectares.
