Composting is one of the foundations of gardening, but what we will talk about – no great fun. Therefore, we will certainly welcome every simplification of this annoying work. Have you ever tried composting in a ditch?
In order for classic compost to be really good, and also to keep it in the best possible condition until use, it is necessary to drag it regularly. It is not easy work, especially when the land is larger and the pile exceeds the normal dimensions. But there is a method that will turn unnecessary exertion once and for all. It is the aforementioned composting in a ditch that will relieve us of most worries. It will be enough if we allow nature to do what is common to her.

The revolution of the old thought
So what is the “revolution” of the return to natural processes without much human intervention? The core of this idea is very simple. Instead of pouring composted material into a pile (which is not great in the garden), we will trip it into the ground where its further processing will take care of the microorganisms without any necessary instructions from our side. Moreover, the activity of worms, bacteria and fungi is in such a case much more efficient than in classical composting. This is professionally called “in situ” composting, ie in places where the result of the process will also be used.

For both fields and front garden
The big advantage of this method is that it is suitable for both large land and for the smallest gardens balanced for. Everything begins with the preparation of the excavation, and it does not matter if it will be a long narrower “line” or even a series of individual pits. It will not matter in the final rating. The best place for such a compost trench will be in the places you want to install in the future, for example among the planned lines of vegetables.
Just a moment digging …
Once you have a precise space, dig up approximately 30 cm of soil. There is a pit of any shape, in which you will then place organic material, which you have just pushed on an unsightly and sometimes stinking pile last time. Ideal for this will be peel of vegetables, coffee grounds, egg shells, but later also rake leaves from the garden and so on.
Choose right, definitely not!
Those who have ever prepared have known very well what it belongs to and what it is necessary to avoid. For sure, let’s remember: Never put meat, dairy products, or even fats. Once the ditch (or pit) is filled, fill it with soil. Everything else is the work of nature, which certainly will not idle.
A few extra bonuses
In addition, this method, which is much easier for humans and means minimal need for the gardening intervention, also carries other bonuses. One of them is to maintain moisture in the ground even at a time when the other part of the land is already dry. The buried material then acts as a nutrient reservoir that is released gradually – just as the plants need. In addition, composting in the ditch will release the part of the garden, which in the past served just for a pile of decaying material.
