The president of the United States, has launched a threat barely veiled to the Russian president, about Ukraine, warning of unpredied consequences if he is not satisfied with the next steps of Moscow in his conflict with kyiv.
Speaking to journalists at the White House, this last night, the American said he planned to speak with the Russian in the next few days, but that Putin was already aware of his administration’s position on the war, as a clear starting point. “I have no message for President Putin. He knows my position and will make a decision in one sense or another,” said the Republican.
And that was when he launched the most prominent dart: “Whatever his decision, we will be happy or unhappy. And if we are not happy, you will see things happen.”
Trump’s comments occurred after Putin said previously that he would be willing to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart, in Moscow, in the midst of the impulse of US President for an agreement to end the war. “Donald asked me for a meeting like this. “I’ve never ruled out the possibility of such a meeting,” Putin said. “But does it make sense? We’ll see. ”
Putin added that Moscow would achieve its goals in Ukraine by military media if it could not reach an agreement. “Let’s see how the situation evolves,” he said.
“Whenever”
In response to Putin’s comments, Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, said yesterday there were “serious proposals” from seven countries to organize a meeting between the two leaders, to which Zelenski was ready “at any time.” However, the leader of the Russian Federation continues to play with everyone. Only greater pressure can force Russia to take the peace process seriously, Sybiha wrote on social networks.
Trump has again suggested an individual meeting between Putin and Zelenski as part of his efforts to end the conflict that lasts three and a half years. Despite the promise of the tycoon to quickly end the conflict, Moscow and kyiv are still very distanced in terms of the terms of a possible peace agreement.
Russia has said that any agreement with Ukraine should include land in four regions that have annexed since 2022, while kyiv has ruled out to yield any territory. Putin believes that Trump’s US administration understands what Russia’s position is and that Russia would be willing to negotiate the end of this conflict, but and their own security guarantees must be fulfilled, experts say.
Meanwhile, Zelensky has announced that he hoped to talk to Trump this Thursday to boost new against Russia. “We also have signs from the United States that it will provide support, and this is important,” Zelensky said in Copenhagen, referring to security guarantees proposed for Ukraine after the conflict.
The ‘willing’, arranged
The French president, Emmanuel Macron, said Wednesday that the security guarantees for Ukraine were ready and that they would be backed on Thursday by the “coalition of the willing” that supports kyiv. “We are willing as Europeans to offer security guarantees to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people on which a peace agreement is signed,” Macron said.
Just this Thursday, in Paris, a meeting of the or willing on Ukraine is held, chaired by Macron and the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. The Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, must appear telematically because his plane has broken down this morning and has had to return to Madrid.
The coalition groups 35 countries, most of them European and others such as Canada, Japan and Australia, and the meeting will have a hybrid format, since there will be leaders in person (including Ukrainian President Zelenski) and others who will participate by videoconferencing. The objective is to analyze the work done in recent weeks on the security guarantees for Ukraine and the consequences of Russia to continue rejecting peace.
