Elevator of Gloria, who derailed this Wednesday in Lisbon
The main international newspapers highlight this Thursday to the accident with the Glory Elevator in Lisbon, which caused at least 17 dead and 21 injured. The international press highlights the fact that it is one of the main tourist attractions of the Portuguese capital.
Citing the Associated Press (AP) agency, the news of the derailment was featured on the online page of the US newspaper.
“The authorities have called an accident, the worst in the city’s recent history, and has thrown a shadow on the charm of Lisbon for the millions of foreign tourists who arrive every year,” AP said.
Already the agency stressed that the government decreed a day of national mourning and that the prosecutor announced the opening of an inquiry into the causes of the disaster.
The Spanish agency pointed out that the prime minister, Luís Montenegro, canceled almost the entire agenda for today, while also the Spanish Europa Press revealed that at least two Spanish citizens are among the injured.
A UK Foreign Ministry spokesman told the newspaper in contact with the Portuguese authorities and available “to provide consular assistance if there are affected British citizens.”
The newspaper also recalled that “Portugal, and Lisbon in particular, has lived a boom Tourist in the last decade, with visitors to fill the popular city center in the summer months. ”
The French diary said that “images published on social networks minutes after the tragedy show the fully displaced funicular, leaning against a wall, in the curve at the bottom of the street where it passed.”
The Spanish newspaper recalled that “this is not the first accident reported in the elevator (…). Another incident occurred on May 7, 2018, due to a failure in funicular maintenance services, although the incident was resolved without victims.”
There are victims of at least 10 nationalities
João OliveiraDirector of the Judicial Police (PJ) of Lisbon and Tagus Valley, told SIC Notícias, at 00h10, that some of the victims of the accident are foreigners, which “holds a degree of difficulty for identification.”

The injured, 12 women and seven men are from at least 10 different nationalities: four of Portuguese nationality, two Spanish, one Korean, a Cape Verdean, a Canadian, one Italian, a Frenchman, a Swiss and a Moroccan, with four injuries whose nationalities are not yet identified.
According to the official, of the 38 people affected by the accident, 15 died on Wednesday and 23 were transported or moved by their own means to hospitals, two of which eventually died at night.
Two Spanish injuries have already had high
Two Spaniards who were injured in the derailment of the Glory Elevator were discharged, said the Foreign Minister of Spain, who transmitted to the Portuguese counterpart solidarity and availability for what is necessary.
Minister José Manuel Albares added that there is no information from Spanish among the deadly victims.
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed on Wednesday on social network X, dismay with “the terrible accident” and expressed “solidarity for the families of the victims and for the Portuguese people at this difficult time”.
The Elevator of Gloria, in Lisbon, derailed this Wednesday, at 6:04 pm, on the Calçada da Gloria. The elevator is managed by Carris, connects the restorers to the garden of São Pedro de Alcântara, in Bairro Alto, in a course of about 265 meters and is much sought after by tourists.
