The tragedy occurred at the end of May, when officers from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a nighttime disturbance. After arriving at the crime scene, they found the body of a young woman in the apartment. During a subsequent search of the area, they discovered a car with the suspect in the parking lot in front of a nearby company. The man suffered an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Although he survived the initial suicide attempt, he succumbed to his injuries in the hospital the next day.
At the time, the couple was going through a difficult divorce and, according to local media, they had an extremely turbulent relationship. Court records revealed that the split was accompanied by mutual accusations of domestic violence and a bitter custody battle over their two daughters, ages 4 and 7. In the past, both parents even asked the court to order the other to attend compulsory courses on how to deal with aggression and domestic violence.
Relatives and friends are devastated by the sudden loss. Family friend Rita Rand, who immediately started a public fundraiser for the orphaned girls, described Meridian as a kind and selfless woman. “She was a light in the lives of all of us. Her kindness, compassion and unwavering faith in God touched everyone she met. She was always there for her family and those around her, offering support, encouragement and love,” she said of her late mother.
