Inaugurated in 1885, the elevator of glory (elevator gives gloria), the funicular that this Wednesday is one of the tourist attractions of the center of Lisbon.
The vehicle connects the Plaza de Restauradores with the Alto Bairro and one of the most famous viewpoints in the capital, that of São Pedro de Alcântara.
This means of transport is one of the funicular that exist in the historic center of the city, such as Bica or Lavra, to help upload its steep slopes.
It was conceived by the Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier Du Ponsard and originally worked by water counterweight. Later he had a steam locomotion system and in 1914 he pioneered to move by electric traction.
It has capacity for 22 people sitting and 20 standing in each of the two cabins it has, according to Portuguese media.
The funicular makes a 275 meters in two minutes, along the steep road of Gloria, which has an 18 %inclination.
The queues of to ride in this funicular picturesque, white and yellow, which, apart from living the experience of getting into an old vehicle, save the slope to climb to the Alto Bairro.
At the moment the causes that have made this means of historical transport of the capital and the Lusas authorities have not announced neither the identities or the nationality of the victims, although Spain has already confirmed that there are at least two Spanish injured.
