The demonstrations held in Brazil on Sunday (7/8), both in defense and against former President Jair Bolsonaro, gained prominence in the international press on Monday (8/9). The protests occurred during the independence day celebrations and precede the long -awaited verdict of the process. The former chief of state is accused of a coup attempt after the 2022 elections.

According to the Swiss channel RTS, “tens of thousands of Jair Bolsonaro supporters have manifested themselves in major Brazilian cities.” The broadcaster classified the act as a “demonstration of strength” before the court decision that could define the former president’s political future.

However, “in the absence of the main interested party, who is under house arrest and forbidden to use social networks, the demonstrations did not attract the expected audience,” says the French newspaper Le Monde. According to the afternoon, the protest recorded a number of participants “far from the great demonstrations of the past, which mobilized hundreds of thousands of supporters.”

The American newspaper The New York Times highlighted a climate of growing tension in the country, although it points out that mostly these demonstrations were peaceful. “On the right, protesters wrapped in flags in Brazil and the United States protested against criminal proceedings. On the left, there were requests for the arrest of Bolsonaro and criticism of former President Donald Trump’s attempt to protect him,” the vehicle summarized.

Euronews also addressed the clash between the two political fields. The European broadcaster recalled that supporters of the current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also went to the streets on Sunday, with great concentrations in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia-cities that also recorded pro-Bolsonaro acts. “Police organized the demonstrations in different places and separated by several kilometers, thus avoiding possible disorders,” says the European channel.

United States Flags

One of the points that most caught the attention of the foreign press was the presence of US flags in Bolsonarist acts. The Diário de Notícias newspaper, from Portugal, published a short story with the title: “Bolsonarists extend US giant flag in demonstration.”

The correspondent of the French newspaper Le Monde also reported the presence of a huge American flag raised by the crowd, “as a way to beg for the help of US President Donald Trump, who imposed 50% customs tariffs on Brazilian products to defend his protégé,” the text explains.

The New York Times added that Trump has been trying to press Brazilian authorities to withdraw the accusations against Bolsonaro, but to no avail. “Their efforts, so far, have only strengthened support to President Lula,” the newspaper concludes.

Profile of Alexandre de Moraes

Meanwhile, the British newspaper The Guardian also features an extensive profile of STF minister Alexandre de Moraes. The text highlights the role of Moraes in conducting the lawsuits against Bolsonaro and describes the minister as “relentless” in defense of democratic institutions. “Today, many left -wing Brazilians acclaim Moraes as the savior of the fifth largest democracy in the world,” the diary publishes.

However, the text ponders that the minister is also the subject of criticism, having already been accused of authoritarianism. “On one occasion, Moraes compared leftist protesters to guerrillas,” the story remembers.

“But this animosity was quickly forgotten. After Bolsonaro took power in January 2019, Moraes quickly became one of the most energetic and effective opponents of the far -right politician’s authoritarian plans,” explains The Guardian newspaper.
