On Tuesday, the European Parliament (EP) called on the opening of the first chapters with Ukraine to accelerate its progress on his way to the European Union. According to MEPs, Kiev must intensify reforms in the rule of law, justice and the fight against corruption, TASR reports.
MEPs praise the efforts of Ukraine to strengthen its democratic institutions
The report of the EP Committee for Foreign Affairs (AFET), which evaluates Ukraine’s readiness for membership in the EU against the background of continued Russian aggression, was adopted by 418 votes, 135 deputies were against and 41 was abandoned.
According to the document, Ukraine should continue to implement European rules and complete the already commenced reforms. “MEPs praise the extraordinary efforts of Ukraine to strengthen its democratic institutions and encourage Kiev to maintain the reform pace. They emphasize the importance of transparent and thanks to the selected selection processes,” the report says.
EUROPARLAMENT: The peaceful solution must respect the will of the Ukrainian people
At the same time, the EP confirmed its “unwavering” commitment to independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. He stressed that any peaceful solution in the war with Russia must respect the will of the Ukrainian people and must not be imposed by other international actors.
“The EU and its Member States must remain strategic allies of Ukraine and should strengthen their leading role in promoting the struggle of Ukraine for sovereignty, peace and justice,” MEPs say.
MEPs call on Trump to receive further vigorous economic sanctions against Russia
They also pointed out the recent meeting of US President Donald Trump with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska. According to MEPs, such steps are “in sharp contrast to the massive escalation of Russia’s attacks against Ukraine, which again prove that Moscow is not interested in peace, but in conquering Ukraine”.
They call on President Trump to act in accordance with its announcement that the United States will receive further vigorous economic sanctions against Russia and the countries that support him. MEPs also agree to provide security guarantees for Kiev.
Ukraine applied for membership in the European Union on February 28, 2022, shortly after the beginning of the Russian invasion. The European Council awarded it the status of a candidate country almost four months later. Accession negotiations with Ukraine were formally started in June 2024. Both parties also cooperate within the Eastern Partnership.
