Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced on Tuesday to pay one million reais (160,000 euros) for collective moral damages, for racist statements made in 2021, while he was head of state, reported the Brazilian press.
The lawsuit was filed by the Federal Public Prosecution Service, together with the Federal Public Defender’s Office, against Bolsonaro and the Brazilian State, which was also ordered to pay one million reais.
On July 8, 2021, during the pandemic, the former Brazilian president, at the Dawn Palace in Brasilia, compared a black person’s hair to a “cockroach breeding.”
“You can’t get in -rhectin, you will kill all your lice,” he said.
In the decision, the rapporteur of the collective of the Third Panel of the Federal Regional Court of the 4th Region (TRF-4) of Porto Alegre considered that “the racial offense disguised as a joking or simple joke that relates the ‘black power’ to insects that cause revulsion and dirt reaches the honor and dignity of black people and enhances the stigma of inferiority of this population.”
In addition, the court also determined the withdrawal of the videos that were shared on social networks.
According to CNN Brazil, Bolsonaro’s defense claimed that the victim was not offended and that the statements were a joke.
On Thursday, Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison, after the first class of the Federal Supreme Court formed a majority to condemn the former president for a violent attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup, participation in armed criminal organization, qualified damage and deterioration of heritage.
Bolsonaro was also considered guilty of leading the criminal organization.
