More than twenty NGOs ask the countries “urgent intervention” in Gaza after the UN Commission Declaration
More than twenty NGOs who work in Gaza called on Wednesday to UN countries an “urgent intervention” after a commission of the agency concluded, for the first time, that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza.
The representatives of 22 organizations, including doctors without borders, the Norwegian Council for Refugees, Care International, Save The Children and Oxfam International, indicated in a statement that “Member States must use all political, economic and legal tools at their disposal to intervene.”
“The rhetoric and half measures are not enough. This moment demands decisive actions,” they added, after Tuesday, assigned by the UN Human Rights Council, concluded that at least four of the five acts typified in the Convention for the Prevention and Sanction of the Crime of Genocide (1948) are fulfilled in Gaza.
The NGOs warned that “thousands of lives are at stake” and stressed that in the capital of the enclave they still live about one million people, exposed to the ravages of the Israeli offensive, now terrestrial, which seeks to take control of the city.
Organizations warned that “more than half a million people starve to death” since the Israeli army reinforced its siege six months ago, blocking access to food, fuel and medicines.
According to the Gazatí Health Ministry, at least 428 people, including 146 children, have died due to causes related to hunger and malnutrition. Given this situation, NGOs described scenes of families that survive consuming “food of unpleasant animal origin or boiling leaves to feed their children.”
The organizations also denounced the “obstruction in each step” of their humanitarian work, and pointed out that the denial of access and “the militarization of the help system has been mortal.”
According to Gaza Health figures, almost 2,500 people have died looking for humanitarian aid and more than 18,000 have been injured at the collection points of the controversial Humanitarian Foundation for Gaza or in the vicinity of the military points where the few trucks that manage to enter with supplies to the Gazatí enclave are passed.
The NGOs urged all parties to repudiate violence against the civilian population, respect international humanitarian law and work in favor of peace. Human Rights Rapporteur, various international organizations and a growing number of countries will describe the Israeli offensive in Gaza as a genocide from the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023. Since then, about 65,000 people have died, including more than 19,400 children. (EFE)
