The trial with Luigi Mangion, accused of murdering Brian Thompson, director of the UnitedHealthcare health insurance, will begin 1 December. New York Judge Gregory Carro set this date on Tuesday after hearing Mangione, who brought several armed police officers to the Court of Justice. TASR informs about this, referring to AFP.
Mangione has achieved partial success as the judge dismissed two points of indictment concerning the murder and terrorism – according to him, there is insufficient evidence. However, the remaining accusations, including the murder of the second stage, remain in force.
Mangione is also charged at the federal level, among other things, the murder, stalking and crime of weapons. US Minister of Justice Pam Bondi required Mangione’s death penalty for Mangionewhat was criticized by his advocates as “apparent political interference”. Mangione had previously declared himself innocent in all points of the indictment.
Thompson was murdered in Manhattan, New York on December 4, 2024. Mangione is accused of firing him several times from the weapon with a damper and the crime scene fled by bike. The attack not only triggered outrage, but also a wave of hateful comments on online networks to US health insurance companies that were accused of enrichment at the expense of patients. There were even comments celebrating Mangione as a hero. If Mangione is convicted in New York, he is at risk of life imprisonment; If he is then tried in a federal court, he may be sentenced to death.
