Autumn crocuses are often confused with Zimowits. This is not surprising, because at first glance they look deceptively similar. They have a similar shape and color of the flower, which develops at the top of a rigid shoot. In addition, they bloom at the same time of year, which makes mistakes very common.

We will see the differences between these plants, but when we look at them up close. Winter is characterized by larger and thinner, usually heavily distributed crown flakes, and they also bless the stamens ended with yellow anthers. In contrast, autumn crocuses have smaller, more compact flowers and form only three stamens and a long -cervical post topped with a three -part, orange mark.

There are many interesting species of crocus that bloom in autumn. Thanks to this, we can choose to our garden those that meet our needs best And they will perfectly complement the space. The most popular specimens include:

  • Crocus sativus – Also called saffron, it is about 10 cm high and flourishes in October. It is distinguished by a post, which creates three, very long, orange features that can grow over the petals. It is from this plant that one of the most expensive spices, which is saffron.
  • Medium crocus (Crocus medius) – This is a specimen reaching 8-10 cm high, which also blooms in October. It has charming lilac flakes and bright, orange or red bars.
  • Crocus speciosus) – it is the largest and most popular species of the specimens listed here. It grows up to up to 20 cm high, has large lily -blue flowers and fairly wide leaves that grow out of the underground tuber. This plant blooms in September and enjoys charm until October.
  • Krokus bladożółty (crocus sidesloleucus) – This is one of the smallest autumn crocuses that grows up to 5-7 cm high. He flourishes in September and October, releasing small, but charming, cream -white flowers.
