Diplomatic Poker in Checkers: Starmer and Trump in uncharted waters

Διπλωματικό πόκερ στο Τσέκερς: Στάρμερ και Τραμπ σε αχαρτογράφητα νερά

Inside the checkers, the imposing countryside of the British Prime Minister, the images of wooden panels, heavy carpets and carefully kept memories of Winston Churchill remind you that decisions that have changed the world have been made here.

In the same room where Churchill wrote some of the most iconic reasons for World War II, today the US president and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir, stood today to give a joint press conference.

Against the backdrop of the great leader’s relics – from his leather seat to his personal belongings – the two leaders answered journalists’ questions on hot issues: the war in Ukraine, the conflict in Gaza, and the security of the border.

The meeting marked the completion of the second, unprecedented, official state visit by Trump to Britain, with Starmer talking about a “special relationship in a new era” and announcing investments of £ 250 billion between British and American businesses.

The disagreement on Israel – Gaza

The Middle East was the first point of friction. At a press conference, Trump acknowledged that the forthcoming London Palestinian recognition is “one of the few issues” he disagreed with with Starmer.

The US president has declined to criticize Israel’s operations in Gaza, focusing almost exclusively on the request for the release of Hamas’ remaining hostages.

“We want it to end. We want the hostages to come back. This is what the people of Israel want, and that is what we want, “he said.

Starmer, for his part, insisted that the British government would proceed with the recognition of Palestine regardless of the timetable of the US visit, describing the move “a necessary step towards peace”.

Despite the friendly tone in statements, the differences in the war in Ukraine emerged strongly, revealing the uncharted waters in which the two leaders are called upon to move.

Donald Trump reiterated that Vladimir Putin has “frustrated” him, but without giving a specific mark on Washington’s next steps.

Starmer, on the other hand, did not cheat his words: “Putin has shown his true colors,” he said, stressing that British support for Volodimir Zelenski remains unmistakable.

Diplomats estimate that Trump’s attitude to the Ukrainian issue looks “step forward – step back”. Although more friendly to Zelenski than the explosive moments of the past in the White House, it has not presented a clear strategy. “The Americans are on a course of gradual convergence with Europeans,” commented a superior source, “but the process is slow and full of old -fashioned.”

Hard placements for migration

Where Donald Trump wanted to leave his footprint was on the issue of immigration.

With his characteristic honesty, he called on Starmer to even consider the “involvement of the army” to tackle irregular border migration.

This proposal, which has embarrassed in the press room, shows how different the approach of the two leaders is.

A time of pressure for London

For Starmer, this visit was mainly an opportunity to “plant the seed” in an American presidency that will soon turn to the domestic political scene ahead of the intermediate elections. “Now is the time to hear the British voice,” he observed British diplomat, explaining why London chose to put such a great emphasis on ritual and symbolism.

“If one believed that this journey (shorter than 48 hours) would dramatically change the political agenda of the last nine months and would bring dramatic changes to the American stance on hot geopolitical fronts, it would be a delusion,” he said.

The actual test will be played not in Checkers’ halls but in the coming months, when Ukraine, Gaza and the “special relationship” itself will be judged in practice.
