The protests aim to pressure the new Prime Minister, Sébastien Leconnu, nominated by Macron, who also faces resistance in Parliament on how to balance France’s finances. Proposals for spending cuts in public services, such as schools and hospitals, are widely criticized.

The opposition claims that public services are being eroded as long as Macron has dissolved Parliament in 2024. Left parties and unions ask rich and companies to pay more taxes rather than cuts that affect low and medium -income workers.

The government of France mobilized about 80,000 police officers to maintain order, but the protests continued, with blockages and clashes in several cities.
