NATO Member States respond to Russia’s airspace disturbances by deploying the Turkish Merops system, which can significantly increase the defense abilities of Poland and Romania.
The increase in the airspace in the Eastern and southeastern wing of NATO by Russia leads to the Member State of the Alliance to the decision to deploy a Turkish survey system for a short time, writes DPA on Saturday. According to her information, training in the use of this system should start next week, with the help of Ukraine.
It is a system known as merops that can be mounted on helicopters and drones and is able to detect enemy systems through clouds and dust. It was first introduced to the public in 2022.
Plans of focus on Poland and Romania
DPA writes that equipped with this system is to be Poland and Romania, which have recently experienced an increased number of disturbances of their airspace by Russian military drones.
Moreover, the North Atlantic Council will meet at the beginning of next week to negotiate Friday’s disturbance of the airspace of Estonia by Russian aircraft.
Incident in Estonia
Three Russian MiG-31 aircraft, which are able to carry hypersonic rockets Kinžal, disrupted the Estonian airspace on Friday. They broke without permission into the area by the island of Vainloo in the Baltic Sea, where they stayed for 12 minutes.
In response to the incident, Estonia also summoned the Russian diplomat in Tallinn and applied for consultations under Article 4 of the NATO Treaty, which allows Member States to convene negotiations if they feel endangered in territorial integrity, political independence or security.
