United Kingdom, Canada and Australia recognize Palestine

The United Kingdom announced, on Sunday (21), the recognition of the state of Palestine after Israel could not meet conditions, including a ceasefire in the war in Gaza, which has lasted almost two years.

“Today, to revive the hope of peace for Palestinians and Israelis, and a solution of two states, the United Kingdom formally recognizes the state of Palestine,” said Prime Minister Keir Stmerer in a publication in X.

Canada and Australia also recognized Palestine this Sunday and other countries, such as France, should do the same this week during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The measure – unprecedented between G7 countries – aligns the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia with more than 140 other nations, including Brazil.

The decision also has symbolic weight, as the United Kingdom played an important role in the creation of Israel as a modern nation after World War II and has been its ally for a long time.

In an attitude that put Starmer in disagreement with US President Donald Trump, unless Israel took action to end the “terrible situation” in Gaza.

Husam Zomlot, head of the Palestinian Mission in London, called the decision a “long -awaited recognition” that “it is not Palestine, but the fulfillment of a solemn responsibility for the United Kingdom.”

“This marks an irreversible step towards justice, peace and correction of historical errors,” he added in a statement.

Among the conditions given by Starmer in July was that Israel came to a ceasefire with Hamas, allowing for more help in Gaza, making it clear that there would be no attachment of the West Bank, and committed to a peace process that would lead to a solution of two states.

“Since that announcement in July, in fact, with the attack on Qatar, a ceasefire is currently in crangles, and the prospects are dark,” said British vice-minister David Lammy.

Stmer has been under pressure from many of his own legislators, annoyed by the growing number of dead in Gaza and the images of hungry children.
