Acts organized by the left against and thethis Sunday (21.Set.2025), were marked by the presence of the Brazilian flag, in an attempt to absorb elements of nationalist discourse. However, the flags and red shirts prevailed.

With demonstrations in all Brazilian capitals, left -wing parties and movements have managed to mobilize tens of thousands of people around the approval of PEC 3/2021, known as PEC of Armagem, and PL 2162/23, which provides amnesty for those convicted by January 8 – approved by the House of Representatives in recent days.

Other left -wing flags were present in mobilizations, such as adherence to the Palestine flag, in contrast to the right, which uses the Israeli flags as a political symbol.

In Brasilia, leftist protesters raise Palestine’s flag

The sanctions imposed by the United States government, in retaliation for the former president’s trial (PL), ally of Donald Trump, in the international field, served that the demonstrations also assume elements of the most nationalist discourse, which has already been explored by the Lula administration, under the slogan “Brazil Sovereign”. On Paulista Avenue, in São Paulo (SP), the protesters raised a long flag of Brazil, with the words: “no amnesty”.

In Rio de Janeiro, with artistic performances by Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil and others, the mobilization focused on the strong connection between MPB (Brazilian popular music) and the left. The octogenarian artists remembered classical music that violated the military dictatorship (1964-1985), as the song “Cup”(By Chico Buarque and Gilberto Gil) and Wonderful Divine (by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil).

In other capitals, the artists also served as a mobilization factor. Singer Daniela Mercury and actor Wagner Moura climbed the trio in front of the crowd in Salvado (BA). The musician Chico César sings to the protesters of Brasilia and, in Belo Horizonte, the act was attended by singer Fernanda Takai, among other artists.

Protesters also brought other guidelines from the left and the Lula administration, such as the defense of the taxation of super rich and the approval of income tax exemption for workers receiving up to $ 5,000.

Left Mobilize again

This Sunday’s demonstrations represented a change in the ability to mobilize left parties and movements since the end of the Jair Bolsonaro government. In recent years, the hegemony in mobilizing great acts has been with the right, which brought together crowds in defense of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and against decisions of the Supreme Court (STF). The left, in turn, accumulated frustrated attempts. On May 1, 2023, for example, he got only a few thousand people on Paulista Avenue after the acts of January 8, even with Lula on the stage.

The latest Datafolha poll shows that 54% of the population rejects amnesty to Bolsonaro and others convicted of coup attempt. The armor PEC also faces resistance: the rapporteur in the Senate, Alessandro Vieira (MDB-SE), has said that of the text.
