MEC Establishes Permanence Scholarship for Medical Students

The (Ministry of Education) instituted the Permanence Scholarship Program for Medical Students. The benefit, part of the program, aims to “minimize social inequalities and contribute to the permanence and diploma of students in a situation of socioeconomic vulnerability ”.

The ordinance that instituted the financial aid was published this Monday (22.Set.2025), in (Official Gazette). This is a (PDF – 513 kb).

The scholarship may be required for students with active enrollment in medical undergraduate courses at federal universities or at private universities, provided that with full scholarship. Students opting for the reservation of quota law will have priority.

The selection of students who will receive the scholarship is in charge of the university institutions. Students must meet the following criteria:

  • have per capita gross gross income of up to 1 and a half minimum wage;
  • have active enrollment in medical school;
  • not having completed any other college degree;
  • Not being a beneficiary of the IFES Permanence Scholarship Program;
  • be inscribed in CadÚnico.

There is still no definition of the number of scholarships offered or the benefit amount. According to the ordinance, the permanence scholarship will be paid by the FNDE (National Fund for Development of Education) and the value will not be “inferior to that practiced in the Federal Policy of granting scientific initiation scholarships”In January this year, the Scientific Initiation Scholarship was set at R $ 700.
