People with disabilities complete Santiago Path
INCASA: The application has been tested that promises to make the path of Santiago more inclusive. MAPEA PHYSICAL BARRIERS AND SUPPORT PLACES.
O Path of Santiago continues to be sought by thousands and thousands of pilgrims. Only in 2024, There were about 500 mil, one record.
However, almost all people who have some kind of deficiency do not complete, or begin, the route towards the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
In 2022 there was only 127 people to complete the pilgrimage in wheelchair.
To try to help these people, it was created application – Inclusive Camino de Santiago: An accessible journey for all.
The project brings together five European countries, including Portugal, where it is led by the Atlantic – University Institute. Spain, Slovenia, Poland and Romania are also involved.
The mobile application promises to make the path of Santiago more inclusive, to Maps physical barriers and inclusive support places.
Susana Rodrigues, project coordinator in Portugal, explains: “This is an application open to all users, in order to provide detailed information about the pilgrimage”.
“The goal is for anyone with disabilities to be able to realize the way – alone or with support – having information on alternative routes, water points, hostels and inclusive restaurantsor even the location of a hospital and what distance It is, ”describes Susana, in a statement sent to Zap.
It is still possible to issue a alert through the app, in real time, if any pilgrim needs help, allowing other users to meet them.
Two Portuguese young people participated in the application test, earlier this month, in a total of 11 pilgrims with disabilities, accompanied by caregivers and professionals linked to the project. The Portuguese have fibromyalgia, neuro divergence, autism and epilepsy. The route started in Vigo and lasted three days.
The project also includes the creation of a platform with free training and resources courses for caregivers, technicians and professionals who organize scripts for people with disabilities. And a documentary will be done with this experience.
