Casa Kahlo is inaugurated in Mexico and shows Frida’s family history

A new museum dedicated to Frida Kahlo opened its doors in Mexico City on Thursday (25), offering a rare glimpse of the artist’s private world and family that shaped his iconic legacy.

The Casa Kahlo Museum, inaugurated by the relatives of, has personal spaces such as the family kitchen, the dining room and the basement where Frida sought refuge in difficult times.

“This museum is a tribute not only Frida, the famous artist, but to her family-the circle of love that supported her,” said Mara Romeo Kahlo, a niece of the artist and founder of the museum.

Exhibitions include family photographs, letters and artifacts, as well as negatives by Guillermo Kahlo, Frida’s father and mentor, who introduced her to art. Director Adan Garcia Fajardo said the museum aims to “re-humanize the figure of Frida, to remind her as a daughter and sister, and to see her through her most authentic self.”

The museum also displays Kahlo’s dresses, jewelry and former vows, providing a personal counterpoint to neighboring Casa Azul, which focuses on his artwork. Casa Kahlo will be open to the public on Saturday (27), according to the organizers.
