This is where Don Vasyl lives – an artist who has been identified with Polish Gypsy culture for years.
Don Vasyl’s house has been standing in the spa town of Ciechocinek for almost 30 years. In an interview, he says that the decision to settle there was made when he got involved in the International Festival of Roma Song and Culture taking place in this city – his family then decided to build their own place.
The artist recalls that the plot of land he bought had only foundations – he built the rest of the structure himself. Initially, there were domes inspired by traditional Romani architecture, but eventually he opted for a stylized form of a palace. D
They are decorated in a richly decorated style: gilded furniture, wall paintings depicting loved ones, porcelain vases and cups. Don Vasyl brings them back from concert tours, especially for his wife Maria, for whom they are a great passion.
The artist emphasized that although today he has “everything”, growing up was not easy. In the conversation, he recalled that his mother sometimes had to ask people for food, and in the worst moments she resorted to stealing – but always to provide for the children.
Don Vasyl’s problems. Luxury residence for sale?
Recently it also turned out that Don Vasyl does not have a permanent place of residence. In an interview with “Fakt” he admitted that his impressive residence resembling a palace does not serve as a home for him, but as a place to which he invites visitors and fans. For a long time, the artist has been living with his children and grandchildren, and recently he asked for support from the authorities of Ciechocinek, with which he has been closely associated for years.
– I have been living with my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren near Ciechocinek for a long time. Due to the nature of my work, I constantly violate their privacy – this is where professional meetings and preparations for the annual Roma Festival in Ciechocinek take place. There is also an office of our association there, and after all, a home should be a place of peace and rest for the family – explained Don Vasyl.
In 2004, the “Gypsy King” built an impressive estate with a total area of 3.8 thousand square meters. In front of the 750-meter villa there is a fountain and a statue of the Virgin Mary. Inside there are 12 rooms, two bathrooms, two kitchens, a spacious living room and a garage. On the property there is also a second building in a shell state with an area of 300 square meters and a large parking lot. In 2019, the real estate office estimated the value of Don Vasyl’s estate at PLN 850,000. However, it is still not known whether a buyer for this property has been found.
