Hamas must not accept disarming without the creation of a Palestinian State, a condition that is resisted by Israel. This is the assessment of Lourival Sant’Anna, International analyst at CNN.
According to Sant’Anna, the Palestinian group maintains a clear position: since 2017, when there was a change in its discourse, Hamas has accepted the existence of the State of Israel and claims the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem as Palestinian territories.
Unpopularity and resistance
Despite Hamas’ current unpopularity among Palestinians, who consider it co-responsible for the destruction of the Gaza Strip, the group continues to maintain significant influence in the region. During the two years of conflict, even under intense Israeli military attack, Hamas managed to maintain its recruitment, training and armament operations.
The group has financial resources, weapons and strong ideological influence in Palestinian society, factors that make its voluntary disarmament difficult.
Complex scenario
The current moment presents contradictory signs: on the one hand, there is optimism with the arrival of humanitarian aid and the release of hostages. On the other hand, analysts point out that a single mistaken political decision or a poorly calculated attack can quickly reverse the scenario of apparent stability.
The situation in the West Bank also worries observers, with the possibility that parts of the territory could develop extremist movements similar to those seen in the Gaza Strip, further increasing the complexity of the conflict in the region.
