The new regulations are intended to help local governments improve recycling levels, but for many residents they mean an additional expense and new rules that will have to get used to.
So far, waste segregation in Poland included five fractions: glass, paper, plastic and metals, mixed waste and bio waste. From 2026, in the Nowe Miasto nad Warta commune, and probably soon also in other places, bio-waste will have to be divided into two categories:
- green bio-waste (e.g. grass, leaves, small branches),
- kitchen bio-waste (e.g. food leftovers, coffee grounds, peelings).
The first ones will go into 240-liter brown containers, which the commune will provide to residents who do not have composters. The second one is for new, smaller containers with the inscription “BIO”.

The most exciting thing is the fact that residents will have to buy an 80-liter kitchen bio-waste container on their own. These containers have special ventilation holes to reduce unpleasant odors and facilitate composting.
Such a container will include, among others:
- leftovers of vegetables and fruit,
- egg shells,
- coffee and tea grounds and paper filters,
- paper towels and tissues.
However, you must not throw meat, bones, animal feces, soil, stones, gravel, ash or liquid waste there.
