Extremist group rejects handing over weapons in US peace proposal; 2nd phase of the agreement faces resistance from both sides
Hamas stated this Saturday (October 11, 2025) that the group’s disarmament is “out of discussion”. The measure was part of the peace plan presented by President Donald Trump (Republican Party) for Gaza.
“The proposal to hand over weapons is beyond discussion and is non-negotiable”a group leader told AFP.
Resistance to the 2nd phase of the plan
Hamas and Israel accepted the 1st phase of the US peace plan, which suggested a temporary ceasefire and humanitarian measures. However, the 2nd phase, which would include the disarmament of the Palestinian group and the easing of Israeli control over Gaza, faces resistance from both sides.
The extremist group had already refused to disarm in previous negotiations. Tel Aviv, in turn, maintains strong surveillance over the territory and opposes the idea of reducing its military presence in the enclave. Experts warn that the impasse makes concrete progress towards peace difficult and increases the risk of new conflicts.
Trump’s proposal
Trump’s peace proposal presented on October 29 culminates in the creation of the Palestinian State, as intended by the local population, Arab nations and Western countries, which took a step forward during the 80th General Assembly of the United Nations (United Nations) by announcing the country’s recognition in the region.
The agreement, however, establishes dozens of conditions and does not set a deadline for completion. Here are the highlights of the proposal:
The only deadline cited in the agreement is for the release of hostages by Hamas. The US demands the release of all living foreigners and the delivery of the bodies of those who died in captivity 72 hours after the official approval of the peace plan by the Israeli government. After that, the steps will be completed subject to approval by the future transitional government.
This is where one of the most debated points of the agreement comes in: the creation of a peace committee led by Trump that will oversee the transition government. The US president did not give details about this group. In addition to him, only former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair (Labour Party) was confirmed as a member. The White House states that other heads of State and Government have yet to be announced.
