The President of the Chamber, reported to deputy Paulinho da Força (Solidariedade-SP), rapporteur of thethat the president of Congress, does not agree with the text that provides for a reduction in sentences for those convicted of the acts of January 8 and the 2022 coup plot. The statement was made during the afternoon of this Wednesday (15), when Paulinho met with the leader of the PL, deputy Sóstenes Cavalcante (PL-RJ). According to a source, it was the rapporteur for the president who then communicated the lack of agreement with the Upper House.
To Jovem Pan, the rapporteur classified the meeting as positive, but admitted that there was no commitment to support from the party. “The meeting was very good, we talked about a possible vote and how to work to have a broad vote. There was no guarantee of votes, but the conversation was productive”, he stated. One week after the promised deadline, deputy Paulinho da Força has not yet presented the final text of the proposal. Even so, he continues to interact with party leaders.
The project faces resistance from both the government base and the opposition. The PL, linked to former president Jair Bolsonaro, defends broad, general and unrestricted amnesty, while government supporters reject any proposal that resembles amnesty. In the Senate, President Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) even said that he was awaiting contact from Paulinho to discuss the text. He had already said that the initial version would not have the “climate” for approval and would need adjustments towards an intermediate model for reducing sentences.
Paulinho recognizes that the success of the proposal depends on the approval of the Senate. Last week, he and the president of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), discussed alternatives to “pacify” the process. Although the text has not yet been presented, one of the possibilities is not to add the penalties for the crimes of attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law and coup d’état, applying only the most serious penalty. This could reduce the sentences of those convicted by up to 11 years, including that of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
Tomorrow marks a month since the urgency to vote on the was approved, with 311 votes in favor, 163 against and 7 abstentions. Before any possibility of taking the agenda in plenary, the president of the Chamber, Hugo Motta, said that he will evaluate the “sentiment of the House”.
