Diane Keaton’s family revealed, this Wednesday, the 16th, the cause of the actress’ death, aged 79, on the 11th. Until then, the only confirmed information was that she had been rescued by the Los Angeles Fire Department.

In a statement sent to People magazine, family members reported that Diane died of pneumonia. “The Keaton family is so grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received over the past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the statement said.

The text also highlights the actress’s involvement in social and environmental causes, and suggests that the public honor her memory with gestures of solidarity. “She loved her animals and was steadfast in her support of the homeless community, so any donation in her memory to a local food bank or animal shelter would be a wonderful tribute and much appreciated,” the statement added.

After the actress’ death, People heard from people close to her who said that Diane faced health problems before her death. “She took a turn for the worse very suddenly, it was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her. It was unexpected, especially for someone so spirited and with so much strength,” said one of the sources.

Another person said that, until a few months ago, Diane maintained simple habits, such as walking her dog daily through the streets of Los Angeles. “She generally dressed the same, with a hat and sunglasses, regardless of the weather,” he said.

Known especially for her role in romantic comedies and films by director (and actor) Woody Allen, Diane Keaton even received an Oscar for Neurotic Groom, Nervous Bride (1977).
