João Nuno Batista finishes seventh in the under-23 triathlon world championship in Australia

The Portuguese athlete finished the race in one hour, 45 minutes and 33 seconds, two minutes and 39 seconds more than the winner, the British Oliver Conway.

João Nuno Batista came seventh this Thursday in the under-23 race at the World Triathlon Championships, which are taking place in Wollongong, in southwestern Australia.

Batista finished in one hour, 45 minutes and 33 secondstwo minutes and 39 seconds more than the winner, the British Oliver Conway, who gained a decisive advantage in the last race, the 10 kilometer race.

Hungarian Márton Kropkó came in second place, 39 seconds behind the winner, but 13 seconds ahead of Italian Euan de Nigro, who completed the podium.

João Nuno Batista was chasing his first podium in under-23, after having been runner-up in the junior world twice in Quarteirain 2021, during covid-19, and champion later, in 2023, in Hamburg, Germany.

At 16:15 (06:15 in Lisbon), the women’s under-23 race begins, in which the Portuguese Inês Rico will participate.

Vasco Vilaça is the greatest Portuguese hope for this Thursday, the opening day of the triathlon World Championships in Wollongong.

Third in the World rankings, Vasco Vilaça can still reach the title, knowing in advance the difficulties: he needs to win and hope that the championship leader, Australian Matthew Hauser, who has clearly dominated the season, does not reach the podium.

The elite finals, which are worth double the points, are the only competitions to be decided by ranking, while in the under-23s, juniors and paratriathlons, podiums directly reflect performance in the race.

Junior World Champion in 2017 and under-23 in 2021, Australian Matthew Hauser has dominated the season, winning three of the five stages contested so far, presenting himself with 3,000 points.

Still with a chance of winning, Brazilian Miguel Hidalgo arrives with two podiums in the final stages and a total of 2,780 points, just five more than Vasco Vilaça, runner-up in the World in 2020, and who has three second places this year.

Ricardo Batista, sixth in Paris2024, appears in 11th position, with 1,670 points, while Miguel Tiago Silva is 34th, with 906.

In the women’s event, Maria Tomé competes, 11th in Paris, who remains 19th in the ranking, with 1,354 points, far from the pair that leads ex-aequo, the French Cassandre Beaugrand and the British Beth Potter, both with 2,925.

In paratriathlon, Filipe Marques also has medal aspirations, after being fourth at the Paris2024 Paralympic Games.
