Retirees can request this support without leaving home: see how to request it step by step

Do you know how much you already discounted for Social Security? Many forget to check this detail (and can cost you money)

It is now possible to request the Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly (CSI) without leaving home. Social Security announced that support for retirees can be requested completely digitally, through the organization’s official portal, saving travel and waiting time.

According to Notícias ao Minuto, the Social Security Institute (ISS) informed, in a statement, that “it is not necessary to go to the customer service to request the Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly”. The request can be made “in an easy, convenient and secure way directly online, on the Social Security Portal”.

What is the Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly

The CSI is monthly support designed to reinforce the income of elderly people in a vulnerable economic situation, guaranteeing a supplement that allows them to live with greater financial stability.

According to Notícias ao Minuto, people aged equal to or above the legal age for accessing the Old Age Pension can apply for the CSI, as well as Disability Pensioners who are not beneficiaries of the Social Benefit for Inclusion.

This support is aimed at citizens residing in Portugal who, despite receiving pensions or other income, face difficulties in reaching a level of subsistence considered worthy.

Online ordering: step by step

To submit the request digitally, the ISS explains that you just need to follow a few simple steps on the Social Security Portal:

  1. Access the official website and select the “Social Action” option;
  2. Choose “Social support and responses”;
  3. Click on “Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly”.

After that, the user must authenticate with their access data and fill out the digital form, attaching the necessary supporting documents.

Who may be entitled

Remember that support is granted to those who meet certain income and residence requirements. To be able to receive the CSI, you must:

  • Have annual gross income lower than the reference value defined by Social Security (for isolated holders);
  • Have gross income that does not exceed 1.75 times this amount if living as a couple or in a de facto union for more than two years;
  • Reside in Portugal for at least six consecutive years;
  • Receiving an Old Age Pension or Survivors’ Pension and being equal to or greater than the legal retirement age;
  • Not having access to Social Pension due to slightly exceeding the limit defined for this support;
  • Authorize Social Security access to your tax and banking information;
  • Be available to request other social support to which you may be entitled.

A simpler and more accessible process

According to the same portal, the digitalization of this process facilitates access to the CSI, especially for those with reduced mobility or who live far from Social Security counters. Furthermore, the online order can be placed at any time, without the need for prior appointment.

The Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly is considered one of the most important supports to combat poverty among the senior population in Portugal. The measure aims to ensure that no pensioner lives below a minimum income threshold and reinforces the State’s commitment to social protection.

The ISS emphasizes that, even with digital advancement, in-person service continues to be available for those who do not feel comfortable placing an order online.
