The Minister of Foreign Affairs, , classified as “positive” the meeting held this Thursday (16) with the Secretary of State of , , in Washington. The meeting, which lasted around an hour and fifteen minutes, focused on the American tariff imposed on Brazilian products and served as a preparatory stage for a future meeting between the presidents (PT) and , scheduled to take place in November.

According to Vieira, the conversation was cordial and productive, but there were no concrete deliberations. It was decided that technical teams from both countries will identify areas of common interest to form the negotiation agenda that will be discussed directly by the presidents. The exact location and date of the meeting have not yet been defined.

The main topic of the negotiations is the renegotiation of tariffs, which increased taxes on Brazilian exports, affecting products such as coffee and fruits. The Brazilian government hopes to convince Washington to review the measures, arguing that they increased the cost of living for North American consumers and harmed the trade balance between the two countries.

In addition to trade issues, the future meeting should address geopolitical issues, such as tension between Russia and Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East and relations with Venezuela. Sources close to Itamaraty also point out that environmental issues may enter the discussions, especially due to Brazil’s relevance in the climate debate and COP 30, which will be hosted in the Amazon.

Vieira highlighted that President Lula’s orientation is to maintain dialogue with all countries and seek a convergence of interests with the United States. “It was a great meeting, with a lot of chemistry. Now, the teams will work to prepare the negotiation table between the presidents”, said the chancellor. This was the first face-to-face meeting between representatives of the two governments after the announcement of the tariff, and is seen as an important step towards resuming diplomatic dialogue between Brasília and Washington.
