The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced on Friday night (17) the commutation of the prison sentence of former Republican congressman George Santos, releasing him immediately. The decision was announced by Trump in a post on the social network Truth Social.
Son of Brazilians, George Santos, 37, was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to crimes such as electronic fraud and aggravated identity theft. Santos had a short stint in the Chamber of Representatives, being expelled in December 2023 amid a series of scandals.
Even before taking office, Santos admitted to having lied about important details of his life during the election campaign. During his tenure, he was charged by the U.S. Department of Justice with numerous federal crimes, including fraud, theft, money laundering and false statements.

In the post, Trump stated that Santos “was somewhat of an ‘outlaw,’ but there are many ‘outlaws’ in our country who are not required to serve seven years in prison.” The commutation of the sentence represents a turning point for the former deputy, who is now free from prison.
