Speaking to journalists at the door of his residence in Santa Cruz, the elected vice president, Edman Lara, declared that he was grateful to the Bolivian people
The centrist senator was elected president of the country during the second round of the country’s presidential elections this Sunday (19). At the time the count was published by the Bolivian Supreme Electoral Court (TSE), around 9 pm (Brasília time), Paz appeared with 54% of the votes, compared to 45% for former conservative president Jorge ‘Tuto’ Quiroga. At the moment, 98% of the ballots had been counted.
The president of the Bolivian TSE, Oscar Hassenteufel, stated that the result “seems to be irreversible”. Speaking to journalists at the door of his residence in Santa Cruz, the elected vice president, Edman Lara, declared that he was grateful to the Bolivian people and for the opportunity to govern Bolivia. “It’s time to unite, it’s time to reconcile. Political colors are gone.”
Lara stated that he is ready to go to La Paz to, together with Rodrigo Paz, “coordinate what solutions should be given as soon as possible to the economic crisis that is hitting Bolivia”.
One of the pending tasks of the new Bolivian government will be to reestablish relations with the United States, which have been interrupted since the expulsion of the American ambassador in 2008 for alleged internal interference, when indigenous leader Evo Morales was president, analysts say.
