A court in the northern city of Kano has ordered Islamic police to officiate the wedding of two local Kano celebrities. after the publication of a video considered “indecent”. The decision, revealed this Tuesday (21) by judicial and police sources, involves a couple with dwarfism who appeared kissing and hugging each other in their videos, acts considered inappropriate in Kano’s conservative Muslim society.

On Monday, a judge ordered the Kano sharia (Islamic law) police, known as Hisbah, to celebrate the union of Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda within 60 days. “The court ordered Hisbah to marry the man and the woman because they are so in love that they show their romance on TikTok,” said Baba-Jibo Ibrahim, judicial spokesperson for Kano state. “The court ordered that the wedding be held within two months,” he added.

Idris Mai Wushirya, who had previous problems with the authorities for videos considered “indecent”, was provisionally detained. A Hisbah official confirmed receipt of the court order and stated that preparations for the wedding have already begun. “Although the court ruled that we must hold the wedding within 60 days, we are determined to do it as soon as possible,” Abba Sufi, director general of Hisbah, told AFP. According to him, “the future bride and groom gave their consent.”

Idris Mai Wushirya’s parents were summoned by Hisbah and gave their “explicit consent”. Islamic police are now trying to contact the family of Basira Yar Guda, who resides in Zamfara state, more than 300 kilometers from Kano. Kano is one of twelve Muslim-majority Nigerian states where sharia coexists with common law.
